The Duclair Design

The Duclair Design in Perspective
The September 1932 edition of Yachting Monthly included the drawings for Harrison Butler's Marita design. Relatively small, with an overall lenth of 19 feet, it was described as a day boat. No boats are known to have been built to this design but it spawned a five page article in the June 1941 edition of The Yachtsman in which Douglas Birt revisited the design and subjected it to a Metacentric Analysis. It proved to be "unbalanced", meaning that as it healed its sailing characteristics would change. With Harrison Butler's blessing, the design was adjusted to make it Metacentrically correct, the Duclair design being the result. The article will be of appeal to those interested in the evolution of yacht design and is presented here: Page 164  : Page 165  : Page 166  : Page 167  : Page 168
Perhaps because the Duclair design appeared mid way through the Second World War, no boats are known to have been built to the design.
