Rival of Belmont : Sidney-Hobart Race Winner 1961
With the 2019 Sydney-Hobart race due to start in a few days time on 26th December, I thought I'd look back through previous winners. To my surprise I discovered that in 1961 it was won by an Alan Buchanan designed boat, Rival of Belmont. This must have given the designer's reputation quite a boost at the time and helped cement his standing as a designer of racing boats. By coincidence, Rival of Belmont is still afloat and currently up for sale for around £13,000 which has made finding out a little more about her relatively easy.

The win in 1961

In particular I've found an image of a plaque celebrating her historic win, and also an image of her Lloyd's Registration number, etched into a timber beam, which matches that in the registers

Lloyd's Registration Number

I've also tracked down a similar ship Sequana, also currently for sale, and also a regular competitor in both the Sydney-Hobart Race and the Brisbane-Gladstone Race in the 1960s.
