Our First Plastic Invited Friend
John Castell is an admirer of Harrison Butler's work who knew the HBA's late President, Joan Jardine-Brown. He often attended the annual East coast Meet at Woodbridge. Ellen Grace is John's current boat. She is a Barbican 35, of which only a few were cast, this being the less popular sloop version of the Super Sovereign 35, also designed by Kim Holman. She is made of fibreglass and was fitted out by her original owner.
John writes, “I have been working very hard, since I bought her in 2009, to improve her. I bought her in Watchet and, after preliminary work, sailed her round to Felixstowe.  Ellen Grace is based at Waldringfield on a swinging mooring on the river Deben.  She is very solidly built, and so a worth while project. I have attached a photo of her on her mooring at Waldringfield and another of her ploughing through a choppy sea off Landguard Point at the mouth of the River Orwell”.
