Ara : Tantalizing snippets of News
I took this photograph of Pin Mill from aboard Tramontana as I sailed down the River Orwell, July 2014. It's here, in 1936, that boat builders Harry King and Son built Ara*, one of our 'lost' Harrison Butler designed boats. Harry King and Sons Ltd are still at Pin Mill, still working on wooden boats in much the same way as when the boatyard was established in 1850.

Tender built by Harry King & Sons Ltd

Although Ara* is 'lost' a steady flow of news snippets have arrived over the last couple of years. In December 2014 I was able to update this page with the names of two early owners. In addition Paul Leinthall-Cowman told me that Ara* is one of two boats built to the 1933 Pepin design, the other being Mayfly.
In March 2016, Neal Hill, who's the custodian of Naiad, wrote; “I can shed some light on Ara as I owned her for four years up to 1976 when we sold her and bought Naiad. I bought Ara from two joint-owners who had kept her at Blyth on the moorings of the Royal Northumberland YC. When I bought her I moved her to moorings at Amble, a few miles to the North. When I sold Ara the new owner eventually moved her to the Clyde. I have some photographs which I will sort out and pass on for the website. She had sail number 2129Y”.
In June 2016, Richard Pettigrew got in touch to say that he bought Ara* from Neal in 1976. He replaced her Lister diesel engine with a 10 hp Ducati and fitter a larger fuel tank, a VHF radio, self steering and a furling jib. Richard sold Ara* in July 1981 to two Italian fishermen who took her to Palermo, Sicily, as deck cargo on their own vessel.
So, from 1981 onwards, Ara* was in the Mediterranean....
